Talkspace and Michael Phelps announced their partnership on May 22, 2018. There launched a national TV campaign on May 22nd where Phelps shares his experiences, encourage open discussion about mental health, and show the benefits of Talkspace. Phelps struggled with anxiety and depression from time to time. He felt strength when he learned he could communicate with a therapist via text, video, and web. He wants to share these methods with others who are suffering. Phelps and Talkspace are fighting the mental health stigma. He is now a part of the Talkspace Board of Advisors.
Talkspace CEO, Oren Frank, said that Phelps would be a great help to the company. He hoped the partnership would influence people who are struggling with mental health issues to access the new technology. Talkspace therapy is a convenient and affordable type of psychotherapy. Users can use a computer, smartphone, or tablet to message their therapist. Conversations are guaranteed confidential and private through banking-grade encryption. The clinicians are licensed and vetted. Talkspace VP of Marketing, Michael Kuznetsov, said that Phelps’ story would help educate Americans about mental health issues. Anyone can be affected from these problems, but therapy can help.
Oren Frank founded Talkspace in 2012 to connect users and therapists on the internet. It has helped millions of people with addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, family problems, personality disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Studies have shown an increase of millennials with anxiety and depression.
Neil Leibowitz was hired as the new chief medical officer to help prescribe medications through the company’s app. He had worked for UnitedHealth as a senior medical director before joining the company. Talkspace had earlier partnered with Magellan Health.
Talkspace started out as a B2C company, but it is now a B2B. The company developed “Unlimited Messaging Therapy” to make outpatient mental health care more accessible. Frank wrote on the Talkspace website blog that therapy is for anyone who wants to alleviate stress and live happier. Therapists are trained to listen to problems and offer solutions for positive change.
